What is the optimal dog breed for an appartment?
Posted on 19. Nov, 2009 by admin in Dog Q & A
I live in an appartment and I am planning to get a dog. Obviously I shouldnt get a boxer or a collie, but is there a breed that would be ok to live in a fairly small space – an appartment?
I am highly considering a English Springer Spaniel. Any thoughts?

I own 2 yorkies both 3 pounds and a toy poodle also 3 pounds they are very small and do not like to go outside much. I think either breed would be great for an apartment.

a pomeranian. they are cute. not that hard to train. when they are all grown up they won’t get as big as a full grown golden retriever. I hope you enjoy my suggestion. also here are links to pics of them

Chihuahua is a good dog for a small apartment but they like to be held
a lot. They like lots of attention so if you are gone a lot they are not the dog for you.

small dogs don’t necessarily need the least space – take into account breeds like great danes and grey hounds which are extremely lazy, and many small breeds, such as a jack russell, will be extremely hyper!
what you really need to think about is: are you the optimal owner any dog could have? will you be home in this apartment all day and night to take this dog out when it needs to pee, and to keep it company, or will you be taking it to work with you?

Almost any toy or terrier breed will do fine. Since you are a guy, I would suggest a miniature schnauzer.

If you aren’t a fan of small dogs there are some great large dogs for apartments. Greyhounds are absolutely fantastic for apartments. They need exercise like any dog, but not as much as many dogs do because they are sprinters, not endurance dogs. Indoors they are couch potatoes. Honestly, depending on where you live, any dog will work. My buddy has 4 Border Collies in his 2 bed apartment… He is a trainer, but it goes to show that most dogs don’t care where you live as long as you have the time to put into keeping it exercised outdoors.
I’m not suggesting you get a BC, but you need to ask yourself how much time you will have to spend with the dog and then look at breeds that will be able to live happily with what you have to offer.

I think if I see a yorkie, shish tzu or chihuhahua recommended to one more apartment dwellng person, I’m going to scream.
Whether you have a large apartment or small apartment makes no difference. None. What is more important is energy level.
Here are the questions you need to ask yourself: Are you looking for a high energy dog that you want to go jogging, hiking with? Are you looking for a pet that’s happy to hang around the house and is sort of lazy? Or something inbetween?
What about grooming? Are you looking for a type of coat that just needs a good brushing, nail clipping and ear cleaning once a week? Would you mind doing daily grooming? How about paying a groomer every 6 weeks?
I live in NYC and there is every type of dog imaginable living in apartments. Some big, some small. It’s up to you to make dog owning and apartment dwelling successful. You are aware, that your going to have to take your dog out daily, most likely 2 to 3 times a day. 2 of those times, should be for good long walks, romps in the park, socialization and training. Even small tiny dogs, like chihuhua’s, yorkie’s and shih tzu’s need to go out.
If you don’t put in the work, meet the exercise requirements and give the dogs the mental stimulation it needs, your going to have a problem, regardless of what size dog you choose. You will have a dog who barks relentlessly or eats the couch. and is generally obnoxious.
Visit the AKC website check out the different breeds, make a list of what you would like and what you do not like and what you will not accept.
If owning a purebred is not important then visit your local shelter, you will find many wonderful dogs that will make a good apartment living companion.
edit: as long as you understand that the English Springer Spaniel is a hunting/gun dog breed, does have a lot of energy, is highly intelligent, thus needing mental stimulation and training, plus needs quite a bit of exercise.
to learn more about the English Springer Spaniel, plus visit the their parent club Thru their parent club, you will not only learn more about the English Springer, but can find a responsible and reputable breeder or if your interested in rescue, you can find a English Springer thru their rescue organization.
BTW, I’ve known a few English Springers that in apartments.

Honestly, it depends how much time the dog has to spend there.
There’s an officer in the RCMP who routinely lives in one-room line cabins that are probably 10×10feet… with a Saint Bernard. It works because during the day, every day, the officer and the dog were out on patrol, and the officer was on horseback. They did 50 miles a day, so when they got to the next little cabin, the dog was happy to eat dinner and sleep.
Unless you work at home, raise cattle or sheep, or have some other way to incorporate your dog into your work schedule, you have to consider how, when and how often you’re going to be able to give your dog the exercise it needs. Expecting a collie or a boxer to pace all day in a small apartment waiting for you is much like keeping a person in a cell; released, these dogs would explode and start running.
If you run every day, you can get a dog that can accompany you, and it will be as good for the dog as for you; this would mean that you can have any dog you want, pretty much. If you are sedentary, get a sedentary breed, like a Pekingese or a French Bulldog.
The AKC recognizes 173 breeds and varieties; there’s one to fit just about every family. Check it out:

A English Springer Spaniel is good for apartment life. Just give it a lot of attention and exercise.

PLEASE!
Check out your local humane society before you decide on any specific breed of dog.
They often have a web site and pictures of animals up for adoption.
Also consider how much time and energy you will have for your dog.
Puppies require lots and lots of work and are prone to barking and chewing clothing, wood, etc. Not to mention the potty training.
You might find yourself happier with a young-adult.
Good luck and remember a dog is at least a 10yr commitment.

Springer is a big mistake for an apt. This list will show you activity levels – high and medium energy require large spaces.

Small ones like chihuahua, maltese, pomeranian, dachshund, miniature pinscher, bichon frise, toy poodle, chinese crested dog, xoloitzcuintli, lhasa apso, shih tzu, tibetan spaniel, KIng Charles Spaniel (without cavalier), Japanese chin/spaniel, pengkingnees, papillon, epagneul phalene, French bulldogs, and pug.
About Englih Springer Spaniels, they are big dogs. Their shoulder height is about 51 centimeters long. If you want to have English Springer Spaniel as your dog consider living in a house. NOT IN AN APARTMENT.
